Ep-uh-lep-see. Pronounce it. Say it.
Sounds familiar, does it not – that word, Epilepsy.
Epilepsy is a chronic disorder that causes seizures to a person from a sudden surge of electrical activity, which goes on in the brain. A person suffering from epilepsy is constantly living in a danger zone as when seizures occur, they tend to fall or collapse without warning. They may fall on roads, in your home, in water, anywhere and have seizures. It is the kind of danger that lurks quietly in us and without warning becomes present.
Scary, isn’t it? The thought of us or even a loved one, falling or collapsing from the sudden and random seizures that comes unannounced. Like a predator, waiting to pounce on its prey or an uninvited guest that suddenly knocks on your front door. It is unexpected.
To say the least, victims of epilepsy lead a far from normal life. What makes this whole situation worse that there is no absolute cure for epilepsy, whether treated with antiepileptic drugs or having to go through a brain surgery. Both children and adults suffering from epilepsy go through an unimaginable distress. In fact, some patients of epilepsy respond negatively to pharmaceutical drug treatments.
However, what if there was another solution?
What if medical marijuana – cannabis became the alternative from pharmaceutical drugs?
Researcher, doctors and scientists have come to a discovery that cannabis contains natural anti-convulsants such as Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) that will help reduce and control the amount of seizures a person gets. While most are sceptical about the idea, Ricardo Rivera is a brave father who took this chance to help his epileptic daughter.
Rivera’s daughter, Tatyana suffered from having over 300 seizures a day and pharmaceutical drugs did not help her but in fact, made her heavily sedated. Her life was far from enjoyable for a young child.
Desperate to help his daughter, Rivera turned to medical marijuana – cannabis. Using cannabis oil in moderation, he treats his daughter with it. The first time Tatyana received her medical marijuana treatment, she was free of seizures for one whole day after enduring it everyday for 3 years. Seeing how cannabis helps to prevent seizures from happening, Rivera, his family alongside a podcast called ‘Wake the F Up’ set up a foundation called Tuffy’s Fight to educate people on the usage of cannabis for those suffering from epilepsy and to support the legalisation of medical marijuana.
Since this miraculous incident, Rivera and his family have been featured on FOX29 News, NowThis – a social media news platform and many other platforms. Through the people behind the podcast, ‘Wake the F Up’, Tuffy’s Fight has gotten funds of $2,000 in 2016 and now is gathering a new fund with the goal of raising $10,000. The fund then goes to helping other families with epileptic children. Tuffy’s Fight has really lived up to its name – fighting its way to making medical marijuana legal and has given hope to everyone out there who suffers from epilepsy.
